About Don Don Drake is a fine artist living and working year-round in Portland, Maine. He is an accomplished portrait painter in oils and pastels, and has been executing commissions since 1981. Among his most notable clients is L.L. Bean for the L.L. Bean Company in Freeport, Maine, whose portrait is on display at the company's headquarters. Don was also commissioned by the late philanthropist Elizabeth Noyce to paint her likeness, as well as those of her three grandchildren. Other clients include Marvin Sadik, the former Director of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
Don was a Merit Award winner at the 1981 National Portrait Seminar competition in New York City. His award-winning painting, selected from among those of artists representing all 50 states and five different countries, appeared in the March 1982 issue of American Artist Magazine.
In addition to portraits, Don also paints landscapes, figures, and still life. Teaching
Don Drake has taught portrait, landscape, still life, and figure painting at his private studio in Portland for over 17 years. Don has also taught adult education classes in drawing and painting at the Portland Arts & Technology School, as well as private classes for adults in the Washington, DC area. Don holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree from American University. |
