Stroudwater Meadow and Fore River

This is an oil painting of the Stroudwater Meadow near the Fore River in the Stroudwater area of Portland, Maine. This was painted Plein Air (fully painted on location). This was painted mid-day so the predominant light source was directly overhead. It posed a challenge. The paint has been applied thickly and directly. John Singer Sargent's landscape paintings influence me. His "alla-prima" methods are exciting and colorful. I wanted to create a deep sense of space by intensifying the foreground while the background colors were grayer and more relaxed. The warm sunshine and colors promote a feeling of tranquility.

This oil painting sold recently. Prints are available.
