The Weight of Love
This painting is a deeply personal meditation on the sacrificial love of Jesus. It is my humble attempt to reimagine the moment of His descent from the cross—a moment I’ve long held in reverence, now expressed through brush, light, and form. Inspired by the great masters, especially Rembrandt, I sought to capture not only the physical weight of His body, but the spiritual weight of His gift.
The space is intentionally compressed to intensify the intimacy and drama of the scene. Light pours down from above, symbolic of divine presence, illuminating Christ’s lifeless form rendered in greys and greens—colors chosen to emphasize the fullness of His humanity, His mortality. He is cradled by a worshiper, receiving the healing touch of His blood—a quiet, powerful transference of grace.
To the right, one figure gently removes the final nail from His hand, while another prepares the burial cloth. Behind them stands a barren tree—silent, but resolute. It reminds us that through death comes resurrection, and through suffering, new life.
This piece is especially close to my heart. The figures are modeled by my two sons and their cousin, anchoring the painting not only in my faith, but in my family. It is through Christ’s ultimate act of love that I experience the blessings I hold most dear.
The original painting now resides with a collector in California. I’m offering a limited signed edition of 25 for those who feel moved to bring this reflection of sacred love into their own space.
