Peonies have been painted by artists throughout the centuries. Master painters like Manet and John LaFarge have executed gorgeous paintings of peonies. They are beautiful flowers. I wanted to paint their beauty against a dark and rugged environment. Even though they are delicate they flourish against that environment. This is a painting that engenders hope in us.
