Exchange Street
This is a pastel painting of Exchange St. in Portland, Maine. I love the character of the tall, thin, unique Trelawney building in the middle ground. I wanted to capture the powerful afternoon, Maine light flooding down the street and splashing onto the bright brick building on the left. The bicyclist in the middle of the street is peddling against the warm light. I also enjoyed the fluid reflections and light on the car in the foreground. The auto in the foreground provided an opportunity to create a deep sense of space.
I feel the light on the solid structure of the buildings gives us a sense of stability and peace as we view the painting.
